About the Tradescantia Zebrina

Tradescantia zebrina (formerly Zebrina pendula), or Wandering Jew, is native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia, where it forms dense ground cover in moist, shaded habitats. Its pointed, oval leaves display striking metallic silver-purple stripes over dark green, with vivid purple undersides. In bright light, the metallic sheen intensifies. Stems grow rapidly, trailing or spreading to form cascading curtains from hanging baskets. Small, three-petaled pink to purple flowers appear throughout the year. Its vigorous growth, vivid coloring, and ease of propagation make it one of the fastest-growing and most colorful trailing houseplants.

Origin: Mexico

Care Tips

Needs bright indirect light to maintain its vibrant purple and silver coloring; in low light, leaves become predominantly green and lose their metallic sheen. Water when the top centimeter of soil is dry -- it prefers consistent moisture but tolerates brief dry spells. Moderate humidity is preferred. Feed every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Pinch or prune leggy stems regularly to encourage full, bushy growth; the plant tends to become leggy and bare at the base over time. Propagate extremely easily by placing stem cuttings in water or directly in moist soil.
