About the Syngonium

Syngonium (Syngonium podophyllum), or Arrowhead Vine, is native to the tropical rainforests of Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. Its leaves change shape as the plant matures -- starting as compact, arrow-shaped juvenile leaves and developing into deeply lobed, multi-fingered adult leaves as vines elongate. Cultivars come in a wide range of colors including green, white, pink, and almost-red varieties. Young plants grow as compact, bushy mounds, while mature specimens develop climbing or trailing vines with aerial roots. This dual personality and color variety make it a versatile plant for pots, hanging baskets, or trained on supports.

Origin: Central and South America

Care Tips

Adapts to low through bright indirect light; pink and white varieties need brighter light to maintain their coloring. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Average household humidity is fine, though higher humidity encourages larger, more colorful leaves. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. To maintain a compact, bushy form, regularly prune the trailing vines back to the base -- left unchecked, it will climb or trail aggressively. Provide a moss pole to encourage climbing and larger, more lobed leaf development. Propagate easily from stem cuttings with at least one node, rooted in water or soil.
