About the ZZ Plant
The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is native to the dry grasslands and forests of eastern Africa, from Kenya to South Africa. Its thick, potato-like rhizomes store water underground, supporting upright stems lined with pairs of glossy, dark green oval leaflets. The waxy coating on its leaves gives it a naturally polished appearance. Growth is slow but steady, with new stems emerging as tightly curled shoots that gradually unfurl. Extremely drought-tolerant and shade-adapted, it thrives in conditions that would stress most houseplants, earning its reputation as virtually indestructible.

Care Tips
Tolerates low light remarkably well, including windowless offices with fluorescent lighting, though growth is faster in bright indirect light. Water sparingly -- allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every 2-4 weeks depending on light and season. Its rhizomes are highly susceptible to rot in soggy soil, so use a well-draining mix and pots with drainage holes. Average household humidity is fine. Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer 2-3 times during the growing season. Propagate by division of rhizomes or by rooting individual leaflets in soil, though leaf propagation takes several months.
