About the Cast Iron Plant
The Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior) earned its common name through extraordinary toughness, thriving where most houseplants fail. Native to the forest floors of Japan and Taiwan, it grows in deep shade beneath dense evergreen canopies. It produces elegant, arching, dark green lance-shaped leaves directly from underground rhizomes, each leaf reaching up to 60 cm long. Growth is slow and deliberate, with new leaves emerging one at a time. Popular since the Victorian era for surviving dim, poorly ventilated parlors, it remains the go-to choice for challenging low-light spots in homes and offices.

Care Tips
Tolerates very low light, including north-facing rooms and interior spaces far from windows; direct sun actually scorches its leaves. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry between waterings -- it is quite drought-tolerant once established. Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot. Thrives in average household temperatures and low humidity. Feed only 2-3 times per year with a balanced liquid fertilizer; over-fertilizing causes leaf tip burn. Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust. Repot only when severely root-bound, as it dislikes disturbance. Propagate by dividing rhizome clumps in spring.
