About the Prayer Plant
The Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura) is native to the tropical forests of Brazil, where it grows as a low-spreading ground cover on the moist forest floor. Its oval leaves feature striking herringbone patterns of dark green veins over lighter green, with reddish-purple undersides. The plant derives its common name from its nyctinastic behavior -- leaves fold upward each evening like hands in prayer and reopen at dawn. Several popular cultivars exist, including the red-veined var. erythroneura and the black-spotted var. kerchoveana. Its captivating daily leaf movement adds living drama to any collection.

Care Tips
Prefers low to medium indirect light; direct sun washes out the leaf patterns and can cause scorching. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged -- never let it dry out completely, as drought causes leaf curling and brown edges. Use filtered or distilled water, as this species is sensitive to chemicals in tap water. Humidity above 60% is ideal; crispy leaf tips indicate dry air. Group with other plants or use a humidifier. Feed every 2 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Propagate by division or by rooting stem cuttings in water.
