About the Rex Begonia

Rex Begonia (Begonia rex-cultorum) hybrids originate from Begonia rex, a species native to the forests of northeastern India and southern China. They are grown exclusively for their spectacular, asymmetrical leaves, which display an astonishing range of colors, patterns, and textures including metallic silvers, deep purples, hot pinks, spiraling centers, and veined patterns. Leaf surfaces can be smooth, textured, hairy, or ruffled. The inconspicuous flowers are typically removed to direct energy to foliage. With hundreds of cultivars available, Rex Begonias are the peacocks of the houseplant world, offering endless variety for collectors.

Origin: India

Care Tips

Provide bright indirect light; too much direct sun scorches the colorful leaves, while too little dulls the patterns. Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged -- the rhizome and stems rot easily in wet conditions. Water at the soil level, keeping moisture off the leaves, which are prone to powdery mildew. Humidity above 50% is important but avoid misting directly onto the textured leaves. Feed every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Provide good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Propagate by leaf cuttings: pin a leaf onto moist soil and new plantlets will grow from the veins.
