About the Philodendron Birkin
Philodendron Birkin is a relatively recent cultivar discovered as a spontaneous mutation of Philodendron Rojo Congo. Its compact, upright growth habit produces dark green, oval leaves adorned with dramatic white to cream pinstripe variegation that radiates from the central vein. Each leaf pattern is unique, and some leaves may emerge with half-moon variegation or revert to solid colors. Unlike most philodendrons, Birkin grows as a self-heading (non-vining) rosette, staying compact and bushy. This slow-growing, visually striking cultivar has become highly sought-after by collectors for its elegant, designer-worthy foliage.
Origin: South America
Care Tips
Needs bright indirect light to produce the best pinstripe variegation; low light causes leaves to emerge with less white patterning or revert to solid green. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil dries out. Plant in a well-draining aroid mix of peat, perlite, and orchid bark. Humidity above 50% encourages optimal leaf development. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. Rotate the pot regularly for even growth. If reverted solid green or reddish leaves appear, prune them back to encourage proper variegation. This cultivar cannot be reliably propagated from cuttings; division of basal offsets is preferred.
