About the Baby Rubber Plant

Peperomia obtusifolia, the Baby Rubber Plant, is native to the tropical forests of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Florida, where it grows as an epiphyte or terrestrial plant in humid, shaded conditions. It produces thick, rounded, succulent-like leaves in deep glossy green, with variegated cultivars featuring cream, yellow, or white margins. The upright, bushy habit stays compact at 25-30 cm. Despite its common name, it is unrelated to the true Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica). Its waxy, low-maintenance foliage, pet-safe status, and compact size make it one of the most versatile and beginner-friendly houseplants for desks, shelves, and small spaces.

Origin: Central America

Care Tips

Adapts to low through bright indirect light; variegated varieties need brighter conditions to maintain their coloring. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil has dried -- the fleshy leaves store water, making it more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering. Root rot is the primary risk in soggy soil. Use a well-draining potting mix with added perlite. Average household humidity is fine. Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Propagate from stem tip cuttings or leaf cuttings placed in moist soil or water. Remove any dead or yellowed leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy.
