About the Polka Dot Plant

The Polka Dot Plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya) is native to the forests of Madagascar, where it grows as a small, bushy ground cover in warm, humid shade. Its soft, oval leaves are liberally splashed and speckled with spots of pink, red, white, or rose over a green base, creating a confetti-like effect. Modern cultivars have been bred for more intense coloring, with some varieties appearing almost entirely pink or white. Plants grow 20-30 cm tall with a bushy, mounding habit. Often treated as an annual bedding plant, it performs well as a colorful houseplant in bright, humid conditions and excels in terrariums.

Origin: Madagascar

Care Tips

Provide bright indirect light to maintain the vivid spotted coloring; low light causes the plant to revert to mostly green and grow leggy. Some filtered direct sun enhances colors. Water when the top centimeter of soil is dry, keeping soil consistently moist. Wilts dramatically when dry but recovers quickly. Moderate to high humidity is preferred. Feed every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Pinch stem tips regularly to maintain a compact, bushy shape and prevent leggy growth. Remove flower spikes, as blooming signals the plant's natural end-of-life cycle. Propagate easily from stem cuttings.
