About the Aluminum Plant

The Aluminum Plant (Pilea cadierei) is native to the tropical forests of Vietnam, where it grows as a low, spreading ground cover in warm, humid shade. Its oval, quilted leaves are dark green with raised silvery-metallic patches between the veins that look as if they were brushed with aluminum paint -- giving the plant its common name. The metallic markings are caused by air pockets beneath the leaf epidermis that reflect light. Plants grow 20-30 cm tall with a bushy, upright to slightly spreading habit. Its striking, easy-care foliage and compact size make it suitable for terrariums, tabletops, and grouped plant displays.

Origin: Vietnam

Care Tips

Provide medium to bright indirect light; the metallic markings show best in good light, while low light causes leggy growth. Water when the top 2 cm of soil is dry; avoid both soggy soil and complete dryness. Moderate to high humidity is preferred and helps prevent brown leaf edges. Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Pinch stem tips regularly to maintain a bushy, compact shape and prevent legginess. The plant tends to become leggy with age -- take fresh cuttings and restart periodically. Propagate easily by stem tip cuttings in water or moist soil.
