About the Ponytail Palm
The Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is not a true palm but a member of the Asparagaceae family, native to semi-desert areas of eastern Mexico. Its swollen, bulbous base (caudex) stores water reserves, supporting a tuft of long, narrow, curling leaves that cascade like a ponytail from the trunk's apex. This unusual silhouette makes it immediately recognizable. In its natural habitat it can grow 6 meters tall and live for hundreds of years. As a houseplant, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and slow-growing, often thriving for decades with minimal care.

Care Tips
Prefers bright light with some direct sun; it tolerates medium light but grows very slowly. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry -- the swollen caudex stores ample water, so err on the side of underwatering. Overwatering leads to a soft, mushy base and stem rot. Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Thrives in low humidity and tolerates dry indoor air well. Feed 2-3 times during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer. It rarely needs repotting. Brown leaf tips can be trimmed without harming the plant. Propagation from offsets is possible but slow.
