About the String of Turtles

String of Turtles (Peperomia prostrata) is a miniature trailing succulent native to the rainforests of Brazil, where it creeps along the forest floor and tree branches in humid shade. Its tiny, rounded leaves display intricate green and white vein patterns that resemble miniature turtle shells -- each leaf is typically less than 1 cm across. The thin, reddish-purple stems trail delicately, creating a fine-textured mat or cascade. It is one of the smallest trailing houseplants, ideal for fairy gardens, terrariums, and small hanging pots where its delicate detail can be appreciated up close. It is pet-safe.

Origin: Brazil

Care Tips

Provide bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which scorches the tiny leaves. Water when the top centimeter of soil is dry -- the semi-succulent leaves store some moisture, but the small root system dries out quickly. Avoid overwatering, which causes stem rot at the soil surface. Use a well-draining mix with extra perlite. Higher humidity promotes healthier growth, making it an excellent terrarium candidate. Feed monthly during the growing season with a very dilute balanced fertilizer. Growth is slow. Propagate by laying stem cuttings on moist soil and pressing the nodes into contact with the surface, or by individual leaf cuttings.
