About the Purple Shamrock
Oxalis triangularis, or Purple Shamrock, is native to the forests of Brazil, where it grows from small underground bulbs (corms). Its trifoliate leaves are deep purple to burgundy, with each leaflet shaped like a triangle or butterfly wing. The leaves display nyctinastic movement, folding down at night and opening during the day like a flock of butterflies. Small, trumpet-shaped, pink-lavender flowers bloom in clusters above the foliage throughout much of the year. Despite its delicate appearance, it is surprisingly tough and can regrow entirely from its corms after dying back. Its purple foliage adds unique color contrast to plant collections.

Care Tips
Provide bright indirect light for the deepest purple coloring; low light causes leaves to become greener and leggy. Water when the top 2 cm of soil feels dry; the bulbs store some moisture, so overwatering is worse than underwatering. Well-draining soil is essential. If the plant becomes scraggly or stops producing leaves, it is going into a natural dormancy -- cut back watering, remove dead foliage, and store the pot in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks. Fresh growth will resume when watering restarts. Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Propagate by dividing the small bulbs.
