About the Old Man Cactus

The Old Man Cactus (Cephalocereus senilis) is a columnar cactus native to the dry limestone cliffs of Hidalgo and Guanajuato states in eastern Mexico. It is immediately recognizable by the long, shaggy white hairs that cover its columnar body, which evolved to protect it from intense sun and insulate against nighttime temperature drops in its high-altitude habitat. Beneath the hair lie sharp yellow spines. Growth is extremely slow -- plants take decades to reach significant height, with specimens in habitat exceeding 10 meters and living over 200 years. Its whimsical, fuzzy appearance makes it a conversation-starting novelty plant.
