About the Asparagus Fern
The Asparagus Fern (Asparagus setaceus or A. densiflorus) is not a true fern but a member of the Asparagus family, native to Southern and East Africa. Its fine, needle-like cladodes (modified stems that function as leaves) create a soft, feathery, cloud-like appearance on arching or trailing stems. The plant produces small white flowers followed by red berries. It has a vigorous, spreading growth habit supported by tuberous roots that store water. Despite its delicate appearance, it is surprisingly tough and can become invasive in tropical climates. Its airy, textured foliage adds graceful softness to plant collections and arrangements.

Care Tips
Provide bright indirect light for the fullest growth; tolerates some direct morning sun but hot afternoon sun causes yellowing. Water regularly, keeping soil evenly moist; the tuberous roots provide some drought tolerance, but prolonged dryness causes needle drop. Average to high humidity helps prevent browning. Feed every 2-4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Prune yellowed or bare stems at the base to encourage fresh growth. Beware of small thorns on the stems. Handle with care as the red berries are mildly toxic. Repot when root-bound. Propagate by dividing the tuberous root clump.
