About the Staghorn Fern
The Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) is an epiphytic fern native to the tropical rainforests of Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia, where it clings to tree trunks and branches. It produces two types of fronds: flat, shield-shaped basal fronds that attach to surfaces and form a protective nest that collects debris and moisture, and forked, antler-like fertile fronds that can extend 60-90 cm. The fertile fronds are covered with fine, silvery trichomes. Commonly mounted on boards or grown in hanging baskets, its sculptural form and unconventional growth habit make it a living work of art.

Care Tips
Provide bright indirect light; some direct morning sun is tolerated, but midday sun scorches the fronds. When mounted, water by soaking the entire root ball in water for 10-15 minutes weekly, then allowing it to drain and dry slightly between waterings. Brown shield fronds are normal and should never be removed -- they protect the roots. Maintain moderate to high humidity. Feed monthly during the growing season by diluting liquid fertilizer into the soaking water. The silvery trichomes on the fronds are protective -- avoid wiping or handling the fronds. Propagate by removing pups (offsets) that emerge from the base.
