About the Moth Orchid
The Phalaenopsis orchid, or Moth Orchid, is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and northern Australia, where it grows as an epiphyte on tree branches in filtered light. Its thick, fleshy roots absorb moisture from the air, while broad, leathery basal leaves support arching flower spikes bearing blooms that can last 2-3 months. Available in white, pink, purple, yellow, and patterned varieties, Phalaenopsis is the most widely sold orchid genus worldwide. Despite its exotic appearance, it adapts well to home conditions and will rebloom reliably with proper care.

Care Tips
Provide bright indirect light -- an east-facing window is ideal. Water weekly by thoroughly soaking the bark-based potting medium and draining completely; never let the roots sit in water. The roots should be silvery-green when dry and bright green when wet. Maintain humidity around 50-70%. To trigger reblooming after flowers drop, expose the plant to slightly cooler nighttime temperatures (15-18C) for a few weeks. Feed with a specialized orchid fertilizer at quarter strength with each watering. Repot every 1-2 years in fresh orchid bark. Watch for scale insects and mealybugs.
